Motivation (student)  

 

This entry was selected because it examines post-secondary student behaviors in the online education environment. The Hansen-Brown (et al., 2022) entry is recent.   

Key reasons this entry is relevant: The study looks at the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on loneliness, belonging, and how these feelings were a lens for motivation and confidence levels. The emotional dispositions were indicators of a sense of academic success.  More research needs to be done to determine the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the online post-secondary and its relationship to loneliness and belonging. 

Motivation (student) 

 

This entry was selected because it presents the basis for why networked learning and communication technologies are motivating factors for enhanced online learning. The Anderson (et al., 1998) research is foundational to online learning.  

Key reasons this entry is relevant: One-way communication does not allow the learner sustained interaction. Sustained interaction allows opportunities for collaboration, discussion, discourse, reflection, and feedback. These technologies motivate and facilitate online learning. 

Motivation (student) 

The Hunt (et al., 2010) entry is important to any individual or business interested in the mental well-being of a college student.  

Key reasons this entry is relevant: This entry focuses on the state of mental health among college students. This entry provides resources for demographic data on the increase of mental illness among college students. This entry is listed with the motivation theme because it helps the reader identify the factors that negatively impact motivation in students. Some threats to a student’s mental health are low social support, being a victim of sexual violence, a low socioeconomic background, anxiety disorders, and depression.  

Motivation (employee) 

 

The Lalwani & Lalwani (2017) entry is important to employers interested in factors that cause motivation and dissatisfaction to employees in the workplace. 

Key reasons why this entry is relevant: The Café Exchange Pilot is concerned with increasing retention among newly hired employees. The research examines the relevance of the Hygiene Motivation Theory in today’s workplace. This entry shows what factors motivate employees. It also shows the factors that cause employee dissatisfaction. 

Motivation (general) 

 

The Kurt (2020) entry is recent. This entry is important to teachers, instructors, and employers interested in education, teaching, learning, and training and development in the workplace.  

Key reasons this entry is relevant: It presents Bandura’s Social Learning Theory and how it relates to motivation and mindset. Intrinsic motivation gives a learner a mindset receptive to opportunities to observe his or her environment. Observation can lead a learner to model observed behaviors. Motivation for observation by a learner could be intrinsic or extrinsic.   

Collaboration (soft skills)  

 

The Petrone (2018) entry is recent. This entry is important for individuals or businesses interested in upskilling recommendations.  

Key reasons this entry is relevant: This entry provides insights on why the skill of collaboration is a top skill to learn. This entry synthesizes the results of a survey by LinkedIn of senior leaders. The respondents cited soft skills as being more important than technical hard skills. Collaboration was listed as number three. It is unclear as to whether the soft skills were ranked.

Collaboration (organizational) 

This TEDx (2020) is recent. This entry is important to businesses and individuals interested in a collaborative organizational culture. 

Key reasons this entry is relevant: David Yang provides research on informal leadership styles. This entry compares and contrasts successful and unsuccessful businesses and the correlation to informal leadership styles. The author of this TED Talk is a collective analytics subject matter expert.

Collaboration (human to artificial intelligence) 

 

This Ammirato (2019) entry is recent. This entry is important for exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) is being used by individuals and businesses. 

Key reasons this entry is relevant: This entry provides insights on how AI is being used in Japan. AI is helping to influence people who have depression and their caregivers. AI is used to detect behaviors that indicate depression and make recommendations to improve the condition.

Collaboration (organizational) 

 

The Cohan (2022) entry is recent. It is important to businesses interested in collaboration. 

Key reasons this entry is relevant: Microsoft, Chief Executive Officer, Satya Nadella, provides insights for effective collaboration. Remote working offers flexibility. Managers should honor employee flexibility, break times, and non-work times. Use physical space to allow for collaboration. Managers should have a set of norms for remote or hybrid working and model those norms. And use technology with effective collaboration capabilities and onboarding capabilities.

Collaboration (organizational) 

 

The TEDx Talks (2014) entry is important to businesses interested in collaboration and high performance. 

Key reasons why this entry is relevant: Subject matter expert, Linda Hill, explains her research on innovative and successful businesses due to collaborative problem-solving. This entry identifies innovative capabilities and procedures. To foster innovation, collaboration is used to unleash talent. Diversity of ideas and perspectives with constructive discourse leads to innovative and successful business outcomes. 

Return-on-Investment (Human investment) 

Almendarez (2011) is an entry about the investment in human training and development. 

 

Key reasons this entry is relevant: This entry defines the Human Capital Theory. This entry provides the origins of the theory and how it has evolved. This entry describes the economic and workforce ramifications of investing in training and development for humans. This entry provides an opposing view of the Human Capital Theory. 

Return-on-Investment (Cost analyses)  

 

This DeCesare & Fermanich (2017) entry is helpful to educational entities interested in evaluating cost-effectiveness, cost-feasibility, and cost-benefit for educational programs.  

  

Key reasons this entry is relevant: This entry provides guidance on selecting a cost analysis method. The entry provides basic cost analysis concepts for interpreting cost data. The authors are the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), Regional Educational Lab (REL). This entry provides an understanding for evaluating a program’s impact. 

Return-on-Investment (Value chain) 

 

Jurevicius (2022, August 16) is a recent entry. This entry defines the process steps of value chain analysis.   

  

Key reasons this entry is relevant: This entry provides a description of Porter’s Value Chain Analysis – primary and supporting activities. This entry describes vertical integration. This entry explains cost advantage and differentiation advantage. This entry includes a sample of a company’s five-step cost advantage analysis.  

Return-on-Investment (SWOT Analysis) 

 

Jurevicius (2022, August 16) is a recent entry. This entry provides guidance on performing an analysis of a project, idea, company, or program, using four key characteristics. 

  

Key reasons this entry is relevant: This entry provides guidance on performing an analysis by examining – strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT). This entry explains the importance of each key area. This entry provides examples of SWOT analyses on well-established global companies. 

Return-on-Investment (Cost analyses) 

 

Leonard (2019) is a recent entry. This entry describes two types of cost analyses.  

  

Key reasons this entry is relevant: This entry provides explanations for cost benefit and cost effective analyses. This entry is helpful for determining which type of cost analysis is appropriate based on the user’s objectives. This entry provides guidance on how to distinguish their differences and a helpful method for remembering their distinct characteristics.
